Lima Airport Taxis - What are your options?
Authorized Airport Taxis: The Official Airport Option
What Are You Actually Paying For?
Authorized Airport Taxis, what does that even mean?
Let me start by saying it’s a word game, Authorized Taxi, Official Taxi same thing in Perú. Both are “Authorized” and both are “Official” taxis. The distinction comes from the word “Airport” or in our case “Gringo”. Authorized Airport Taxis, and Authorized Gringo Taxis. Both are officially authorized to operate one as a Gringo Taxi and the other as an Lima Airport Taxi, and only one has a written contact with the airport. I’ll give you a hint, it’s not us.
An Authorized Airport Taxi pays the airport to use the restricted lanes directly in front of the exits in Lima. That convenience and immediate availability are part of the service you’re paying for. You’re getting a taxi at the airport without having to arrange your transport beforehand.
Drivers working with authorized airport taxi companies have told us they pay a 20% commission on each fare to the company they work with.
Let's Be Clear: The Airport Does Not Regulate Lima's Taxis
After 11 years working in airport transportation, there’s something I think travelers deserve to understand: Lima Airport Partners is the airport operator, not the authority responsible for authorizing taxis to operate in Lima.
The airport can control who accesses its facilities, where taxi companies pick up passengers, and which operators have commercial arrangements with the airport. But airport access and legal taxi authorization are two different things.
A company may pay for the privilege of picking up passengers directly outside the terminal. That can offer convenience, but it shouldn’t be confused with the legal authorization to operate a taxi in Lima.
So when you see the words “Authorized Airport Taxi,” ask yourself: authorized by whom, and for what?
Private Hire Airport Taxis - Gringo Taxis is Considered by many to be a top Private Hire Taxi
Private-hire taxis are booked for a specific journey. The driver is there for one reason: to pick you up and take you to your destination.
At Gringo Taxis, we combine more than 40 years of combined professional driving experience with pre-arranged pickups, agreed prices, and a clear point of contact if you need assistance. We work with authorized taxi providers and tourism vehicles, helping travelers arrange their airport transportation before they arrive in Lima.
This generally requires an advance reservation, so your journey is arranged before you travel. You can also book and pay for a taxi on behalf of someone else. For example, you could arrange a pickup for your son or daughter before they arrive in Lima, giving them a pre-arranged ride and knowing which service is responsible for their booking.

Informal Airport Taxis: Who Are You Getting Into a Car With?
I welcome some of the steps Lima Airport has taken to reduce informal taxi solicitation in its new terminal. However, the distinction between an informal driver and an independently operated, legally authorized taxi service deserves to be made clear.
Not having a commercial agreement with the airport does not, by itself, mean a taxi operator is operating illegally. Airport access arrangements and legal authorization to operate a taxi are two different things.
In my observation, informal solicitation inside the terminal has decreased but not disappeared. You may still be approached by someone quietly saying “Taxi,” “Taxi, sir,” “Taxi, miss,” or “Taxi Miraflores.” If you engage, they may follow you and try to negotiate a fare.
My advice: just say no and keep walking. Don’t engage.
Informal Taxis outside Jorge Chávez International Airport
What you can’t see in this photo is the 20–30 other drivers standing behind the wall to the left.
I’m not here to fear-monger. I’m here to explain your options so you can make an informed decision. Unfortunately, I’ve heard firsthand from one of my customers how badly an informal taxi encounter can go.
A woman traveling alone negotiated a fare of 50 soles with an informal driver. Everything appeared to go well until payment. The driver used a card reader and charged her 500 soles—ten times the agreed fare.
This isn’t the only concern. In a 2024 investigative report, El Comercio reported that 201 of approximately 800 taxi drivers operating at the airport had police complaints against them, involving allegations of robbery, sexual assault, homicide, kidnapping and other serious offenses. Of those 201 drivers, 143 were facing prosecutorial proceedings at the time of the investigation.
The important question is: who can you turn to when something goes wrong?
With a pre-booked service through an established provider, you have an identifiable company to contact about the service you’ve arranged. That doesn’t guarantee every problem will be resolved, but it gives you a clear point of accountability.
When You Need Help, Seconds Matter
