What is taxi etiquette?
Taxi etiquette in Peru is mostly about being clear, polite, and safety-conscious. If you use a ride-hailing app, wait at the designated pickup point, confirm the license plate before entering, greet the driver politely, and state your destination only if the app has not already provided it. Keep conversation friendly. If you take a street taxi, agree on the fare before getting in because many local taxis do not use meters. Have small bills ready, since drivers may not carry change for large notes. Do not eat messy food, smoke, or leave trash in the vehicle. At the destination, collect all belongings, and pay promptly. Tipping is not usually required for ordinary taxi rides, though rounding up the fare is appreciated. For airport taxis, use authorized taxis. Avoid adding additional stops or asking a driver to wait for long periods unless you have agreed on a price. Above all, stay alert, especially at night, and avoid displaying expensive items or large amounts of cash.
