Do I sit in the front seat or back seat of a taxi?
In Peru, there is no hard rules, however visitors should usually sit in the back seat of a taxi, especially when using Uber, Cabify, or another ride-hailing service. Specifically you should sit behind the driver seat for safety however this makes it a bit more dificult to exit safely. You always want to exit the passengers side of the vehicle for safety. It also allows you to keep bags with you and monitor the route using your phone without drawing attention. In a regular taxi, the back seat is generally the standard choice for passengers. If you are traveling with three people, one person may need to sit in front, but that person should still keep valuables secure and avoid displaying a phone or wallet. Buckle your seatbelt when one is available, keep the window closed in traffic, and avoid leaning out or holding your phone near an open window. Before getting in, confirm the ride and company picking you up. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, ask to be let out in a busy, well-lit public area rather than continuing the ride.
