Moving to Peru presented a unique challenge for my wife and I. As a gringo, Peru generally tries to slot you into one of a few limited fields. If it’s not teaching English, you might have a chance in the mining sector.

Beyond that, unless a company brought you to Peru, your options are few. I spent over 20 years in the United States as a professional driver handling a variety of transportation jobs.

The freedom that comes from being your own boss always appealed to me, and I didn’t want to give up that independence. But Lima simply doesn’t pay enough for a gringo to stay behind the wheel, at least not as an employee. One day, I saw a report on the news about a big taxi company being shut down for 60 days due to a series of violations and crimes against passengers. I knew I could do better.

There had to be a way to bring reliable drivers to customers. Thus, my wife and I founded “TransporteFacil E.I.R.L.” in 2015, which lovingly goes by the name “Gringo Taxis”. What began as a simple experiment turned into a full-time business.
